Soave Classico, Pieropan '07

Grapes: Garganega, Trebbiano di Soave
Each: £10.90

Elegance, style, flair and everything that the rest of the Soavians should strive for.

This has always been a huge favourite of mine and graced every list that I have created since we were first introduced. Nino Pieropan’s ability in vineyard and cellar is matched only by his modest and welcoming nature.
As most Soave you have probably met, and there is a lot of it, will attest, Garganega is an easy grape to grow. What's tricky is growing it with any great character. Nino’s secret is his vineyards. He has inherited and bought good sites and these he works with a watchmaker’s attention to detail. He works equally hard in the cellars and invariably produces amongst the finest wines of the vintage year in year out.
The wine is, as always, clean and fresh and would be perfect with a simple piece of fish, say seabass perhaps barbequed in a grass wrap and waiting to be shared al fresco on a midsummer’s evening camping. Too detailed? Try it.
Nino gets great structure and acidity from his Garganega and perfume and richness from the Trebbiano.
