Chianti Classico, Fontodi, Tuscany, Italy '05

Grapes: Sangiovese
Each: £14.35

Put simply, I think this estate produces the most wonderful wines in the whole of Chianti-land.

You know how dog owners scarily often resemble their pets.....
Well, Giovanni Manetti, who heads this family operation, exudes an air of serenely quiet confidence that would be annoying were it anything but so completely natural. Similarly his effortless style and charm come across as impossibly relaxed for someone as meticulous with detail as he must clearly be. For me the clue is in the family history - supplying tiles for Florence's famous Duomo. Each handcrafted tile is prepared and aged so that it can slide unnoticed into one of the world's most visible landmarks. Could there be a finer celebration of a more everyday creation than in the tiles that roof such an iconic building?
The Fontodi wines exhibit the ingrained understanding of the artisan craftsmen to whom they belong.

We've listed the '05 Chianti as a starting point, as well as their very fine Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). But if you really want a treat I'm sure we could be persuaded to find some Flaccianello for a super tasting box?
